Sensei Devin - Founder/Program Director

Devin Fernandez was first diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa in 2000, a degenerative eye disease that results in blindness. As he wrestled with the implications of this life-altering disease, he knew, despite moments of despair, that this was an opportunity for learning and growing.

Devin Fernandez has been a practitioner of the Martial Arts specifically Ninpo Ninjutsu for over seventeen years. He has a keen sense of how vital an active lifestyle is for physical, mental and spiritual health. He also has a strong sense of service, and understands what it means to give back to his community. Navigating his way through social services for the blind, he discovered a lack of opportunities for fitness activities that engaged this underserved community that he was now a part of. Wanting to integrate his martial arts, yoga, and meditation expertise, and his experience with the gift of service; Devin Fernandez, along with Sister, Kim Fernandez, launched Third Eye Insight.

In 2010, after forming a non-profit organization to bring fitness classes to the blind and visually impaired, Third Eye Insight (TEI) opened its doors. The program began on May 8, 2010, when founder Sensei Devin, along with six volunteers, taught TEI's first class to five visually impaired students. It was immediately declared a success. The essence of the program is simple, yet exerts powerful, rippling effects for its participants and their community.

Every year TEI has added outdoor activities to its program. Today TEI's activities to mention afew, included horseback riding, downhill skiing, cross country skiing, kayaking, surfing, tandem bike riding, fishing, and this year TEI has added sailing and ice hockey to its off-site activities program.

Always an advocate for the visually challenged, Devin Fernandez holds a seat on the Suffolk County Disability Advisory Board, the Town of Islip Disability Advisory Board, the Adaptive Martial Arts Association, and is a member of the Deer Park Lion's club. Over time TEI has had the opportunity of developing partnerships with a network of organizations who offer fitness activities such as, Long Island Ninjutsu Centers, Bay Shore YMCA, United States Association of Blind Athletes, United States Blind Hockey, Vermont Adaptive Sports, Skudin Surf, and InTandem Cycling in New York City.

Other organizations recognizing Third Eye Insight's commitment to serving the blind and visually impaired community are the Foundation Fighting Blindness, American Foundation for the Blind, Helen Keller, Commission for the Blind, Visions, and Eye to Eye.

TEI's reach has grown significantly; extending from Long Island residents to including the New York Metro Area as well.

Devin Fernandez firmly believes that losing your sight doesn't mean you have to lose your mobility, health or independence. He draws inspiration by navigating a sighted world and developing his now seven-year- old nonprofit organization; and sharing his "Can Do" spirit with those who are willing to step outside of their comfort zone by creating an active, healthy lifestyle plan.
